Research and Development Associate I - Fermentation

Objective

The Research and Development Associate I under general direction of the Fermentation Lab Lead and overall direction of management, will be responsible for conducting bench level microbiology research. Ensure that work performed is accurate, timely, efficient and compliant with company policies, procedures and regulations. Participates in continuous improvement initiatives to improve quality, safety and efficiency. Collaborates effectively with other departments to ensure business goals are met. This position is in Bainbridge, Georgia. 

Essential Functions

  • Physical presence at the worksite during all assigned work shifts. 
  • Ability to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; sit; walk; lift more than 10 pounds for certain periods of time throughout the day. 
  • Ability to wear required PPE. 
  • Conduct bench level microbiology/fermentation research.
  • Prepare cultures for bio repositories.
  • Performs all aspects of instrument operations including setup, calibration, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Carries out analysis of all samples required to support laboratory and plant operations.
  • Maintains documentation to support sample analysis and key accountability.
  • Evaluates and interprets results of analyses.
  • As fermentation processes run 24 hours per day, the selected candidate must be willing to work non-standard hours including weekends as necessary.
  • Follow all Company rules, policies, and procedures as may be issued or in effect.
  • Other duties as assigned by the direct supervisor.

In the absence of the Research and Development Associate I, the duties of the position will be filled by the Fermentation Lab Lead or delegated by the Fermentation Lab Lead to a competent representative.

Physical Demands
 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The position involves sitting, walking and lifting up to 50 pounds throughout the day. Incumbent will be involved in chemical and microbiology laboratory operations and will handle non-pathogenic biological objects and chemical agents. Incumbent must successfully pass medical screening, including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE), lift up to 50 pounds, and work in the proximity of toxic chemicals.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
 
This is a full-time position, and hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, hours may vary. Some weekend work will be required.

Travel

Travel as needed to support the company's operations in other locations. 

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related degree.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills.
Preferred Education and Experience

  • 3-years hands on experience operating and maintaining bioreactors and lyophilizers.
  • Knowledge and technical skills in molecular biology.
  • Prior experience using LIMS systems.
